Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) provides enhanced handling when accelerating or cornering and compensates for the towing of trailers. This advanced technology constantly monitors key indicators and applies the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) selectively to individual wheels, helping to correct deviations from the driver's chosen line. While no technology can remove the need for safe driving practice, the Roll Stability Control (RSC) system can help the driver to maintain vehicle control and balance. RSC works in conjunction with Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) to try to reduce the likelihood of vehicle roll-over. If the system senses that the vehicle is approaching a tipping point, it will reduce engine power and use the ABS to help reduce the chance of roll-over.

The four-wheel Electronic Traction Control (ETC) monitors individual wheel speeds and helps distribute drive to the wheels with the best grip. If a wheel starts to spin, ETC sends braking pulses to slow it down, improving its grip and boosting the torque applied to the opposite wheel to reduce vehicle speed.  Land Rover's patented Hill Descent Control (HDC) technology utilizes the vehicle's ABS system to control the vehicle's downhill acceleration on a steep gradient. Gradient Release Control (GRC) is an additional function that further improves control over difficult descents. It does this by varying the brake pressure to achieve the desired acceleration, helping to compensate for changes in gradient. Range Rover Sport Supercharged  features an added enhancement: engaging the HDC/GRC system whenever the vehicle detects a sharp gradient. For example, if there's a loss of traction or braking power, or over-acceleration as the vehicle goes down a steeper slope, the brake pressure is automatically adjusted to achieve a target rate of acceleration.

Adaptive Dynamics offers class-leading performance for on and off-road driving by predicting the response to driver input and allowing the mitigation of any excess movement before it happens. 2012 Range Rover Sport HSE 4WD

2012 Range Rover Sport HSE is now even more stylish, purposeful and smart with a new Premium Dark Finish grille finish, a new gloss black fender vent surround and new body-colored door handles. For even greater levels of comfort and technology, the Range Rover Sport HSE specification includes seats in luxury leather and the driver’s seat features Electric Lumbar Support and three memory settings; also included are electrically adjustable, heated powerfold exterior mirrors. The Parking Aid has been extended to include the front of the vehicle, while a Rear View Camera helps reversing by displaying a wide-angled image on the Touch-screen. Both the BMW-sourced engines in the new Range Rover Sport HSE have brought new levels of performance and fuel efficiency to the marque. The 4.4 litre quad overhead camshaft V8 engine develops 53 kW more power and 82 Nm more torque than the old 4.6 litre OHV unit. In our tests, the new model shaved 2.4 seconds off the 0-100 km/h acceleration time and also showed substantial improvements in in-gear acceleration. Average fuel consumption during testing was 17.4 litres/100 km for the new model, compared with 19.3 litres/100 km for the old model. The 3.0 litre DOHC diesel engine is also very impressive. It puts out a healthy 130 kW and importantly, produces its maximum torque from just 2,000 rpm. That translates into excellent pulling power from low revs and is ideal for towing, or for four-wheel drive conditions.


As expected, the diesel also does pretty well on fuel consumption. Average for our testing was 12.7 litres/100 km. That provides worthwhile savings on fuel bills, even though diesel typically costs a few cents more than PULP. Naturally enough, the diesel is noisier than the V8, but effective cabin insulation means that you hear little diesel clatter within the cabin. Handling qualities are pretty much as they have always been with Range Rovers. The combination of considerable mass, a high ride height and soft, long travel suspension, means that the ‘Rangie’ isn’t too happy about making sudden changes of direction, or being thrown into tight manoeuvres. In these conditions, it lurches and rolls a bit uncomfortably, despite all the suspension control systems fitted. But out on the highway in relatively open conditions, the Range Rover lopes along capably in superb comfort and once you get used to the initially soft feel, it actually handles quite well.

For a long time, one of the more impressive aspects of the Range Rover Sport has been its excellent off-road ability, particularly given the bias towards providing superior ride comfort. The combination of ample engine power, good clearance and wheel articulation, and excellent traction due to the permanent four-wheel drive, and all the various traction control systems, allows the Range Rover to effortlessly handle most conditions that even the most rugged of 4WDs might have a bit of a struggle in. Probably the only 4WD condition in which the Range Rover Sport is not so capable is soft sand. Put this down to the vehicle’s considerable mass, which can result in the vehicle digging in.


The new Range Rover Sport is expensive to buy, big and a bit unwieldy around town, and it’s heavy on fuel if you opt for the petrol V8 version, but as far as providing a top-class luxury, comfort combination of comfort, luxury and fourwheel drive ability is concerned, it has few peers. The input from previous company owner BMW has brought considerable gains in terms of engine performance and efficiency, advanced design, extra features and enhanced build quality, and together, undoubtedly makes this new model by far the best Range Rover yet.

This third-generation ACC system uses 12 beams to scan the road ahead 10 times every second, making it one of the most advanced systems available. It also offers more progressive deceleration, resets more accurately and is better able to indentify smaller road users, such as motorcycles, against larger vehicles and trucks. The ACC can be programmed to one of four settings. These are between 1.0 and 2.2 second intervals from the vehicle in front in normal driving conditions and when either Grass, Gravel or Snow are selected on the Terrain Response dial. The ACC is also complemented by Forward Alert and Advanced Emergency Brake Assist (AEBA), all working together to help avoid a collision, in the first instance, by giving audible and visual alerts. Should an impact become inevitable, the AEBA with full ABS is triggered. This typically saves up to two-thirds of the time of the emergency brake assist system.

2012 Range Rover HSE and Range Rover HSE Lux

For nearly four decades, the 2012 Range Rover HSE has been an icon amongst 4WDs, renowned
for its impressive combination of comfort, luxury and off-road ability. Range Rovers HSE have long been the preferred choice of transport for many a celebrity, plus members of Royal families, and the vehicle has a ‘presence’ on the road that commands attention. However, the path for Range Rover owners hasn’t always been smooth, with some unhappy stories about reliability and finish on the earlier models. In recent years, quality has improved steadily and significantly, and now it promises to even better in this latest third generation model. This new Range Rover HSE was designed during the company’s ownership by BMW (beforebeing bought by Ford) and it uses mostly BMW mechanicals in a new body with monocoque construction (no separate chassis) and fully independent suspension with Macpherson struts up front and double wishbones at the rear.

The new Range Rover’s 4.4 litre V8 engine and five-speed automatic transmission come straight from the BMW X5 4WD wagon and it’s a much smoother, more powerful and more fuel efficient combination than was provided by the old 4.6 litre OHV engine and fourspeed automatic. The second model option for buyers is the Td6 model. As its name infers, this version has a turbo-diesel six-cylinder engine (also BMWsourced) of 3.0 litres capacity. It too, is coupled with a five-speed automatic. As has been the case with Range Rovers for some time now, manual transmission is not available. Equipment levels are the HSE and the Vogue in the V8 models and Range Rover HSE and Range Rover HSE Lux in the diesels. Prices in U.S.A start at $114,990 for an SE (tested), with the HSE diesel costing $80,275. The V8 HSE Lux(also tested) is priced at $84,645, while the Range Rover Supercharged 5.0 liter V8 510bhp the range at $95,675.


As you might expect in a vehicle costing more than $ 90,000, equipment levels are quite extensive, even in the base Range Rover HSE model. Standard occupant safety features across the range include dual front airbags, front side airbags, front and rear head airbags, antisubmarine front and rear seats, height adjustable head restraints and three point seat belts for all seating positions. Vehicle control features include the permanent four-wheel drive, anti-lock brakes (ABS), electronic brake force distribution (EBD), emergency brake assist (EBA), 4 wheel electronic traction control (ETC), cornering brake control (CBC), dynamic stability control (DSC), hill descent control (HDC) and engine drag-torque control (EDC). Comfort and convenience items include climate control air conditioning, electrically adjustable steering column and front seats, power windows and mirrors (mirrors also heated), remote central locking, a trip computer with speed alert, and an auto dimming rear view interior mirror. There’s an unusually large number of interior storage compartments, an abundance of interior lighting and two auxiliary power sockets.

mudguards. Though it’s a fresh new look, the low waistline of the previous two generations of Range Rovers has been retained. Combine that with the high seating positions, and you have the marque’s traditional ‘command’ driving position that has long been popular with owners. With BMW overseeing the development of this new model Range Rover, standards of finish seem considerably better than in past models. Panel gaps in general, look to be larger than those on competitors such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes-Benz ML, but the test vehicle was free of any visible faults or blemishes.

The Range Rover HSE and Range Rove HSE Lux rates highly on both these attributes. The combination of an extremely supple suspension and comfortable, wellshaped seating ensures occupants will enjoy their journey, whether it’s short or long. As usual, the centre rear seating position isn’t as comfortable as the other four positions, due to harder padding and less shaping. However, the rear floor is just about flat, which helps with leg space and comfort. Both front and rear occupants have ample head and legroom.


Though the luggage area isn’t as long or as wide as some of the competitors, the Range Rover still provides a good size load area, with plenty of attention to detail. Commendably, the full size spare wheel and tyre is neatly tucked away in a well in the floor. When longer items need to be carried, the rear seat and cushion are divided in a 2-1 arrangement and fold easily in one operation, without the need to remove the head restraints. As before, the two-piece tailgate allows easy loading, and the bottom half can double as a handy seat or table.

By and large, the driving cockpit of the Range Rover is a pleasant place to be, with a noticeable improvement in the layout of controls and instruments over earlier models. Good room, and the electric seat and steering column adjustments, make it relatively easy for drivers of various sizes and physiques to find a comfortable and effective driving position. Though the head restraints obstruct rearward vision somewhat, the high seating positions and large glass areas provide occupants with a good view to the front and sides. The Range Rover feels big and bulky when parking or manoeuvring in tight places and though the turning circle is large by passenger sedan standards, it’s smaller than the previous model.
