2013 Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra

2013 Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra Review

NOW IN ITS 13th year, Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations division continues to build exclusive motorcycles to target customers willing to pay steep prices for the privilege of owning a Harley that is a cut above a standard production machine. How steep? Consider that the 2013 CVO Softail Convertible’s Prices MSRP of $29,599 is nearly $5000 more than what Harley’s regular-production touring flagship, the Electra Glide Ultra Limited, cost in 2010!

What Harley-Davidson offers this so-called “Alpha” customer in return for his or her considerable investment, however, are limited-edition, high-end custom motorcycles that bristle with stunning paint, eye-catching polished surfaces and feature the cutting edge in Harley-Davidson’s technology, some of which eventually finds its way onto H-D’s production models. Like last year, all CVOs are powered by Harley-Davidson’s sequential port fuel-injected Screamin’ Eagle 110 cid V-twin engine rated at 115 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpm (or 110 lb.-ft. @ 3000 rpm for the dual counterbalanced “B-engined” models). All feature Harley’s 6-speed Cruise Drive overdrive transmissions, and the three FL-based CVOs utilize the Harley-Davidson Touring chassis with its more torsionally rigid single-spar backbone and larger, stiffer swingarm, introduced for the 2012 model year.

2012 Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra

New for 2013, the Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra gives customers the option of a full-dresser CVO with Harley’s distinctive “shark nose” frame-mounted fairing, which reappears with the addition of a 16" tall windscreen. First introduced on the Tour Glide in 1980, the frame-mounted fairing has long been renowned for making the FL chassis’ steering feel lighter when compared to the Dean and Stan Wixom-designed, fork-mounted “Batwing” fairing found on Electra Glide models. On the flip side, Harley customers have complained that the frame-mounted fairing allows too much air to flow upward through the opening around the triple clamps, compromising wind protection.

Harley has finally addressed the situation on the 2012 FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra, which uses wind-tunnel-tested wind deflectors to reduce turbulence in the cockpit. For maximum touring capability, the rear of the CVO Road Glide Ultra features hard saddlebags and Harley’s full-size Deluxe Tour-Pak with an Air Wing Tour-Pack rack, same as the CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide.

2012 Harley Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra

Harley Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra
Of course, what would a full-dress Harley be without a monster stereo system? The Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra delivers in the form of a 40W-perchannel Harman/Kardon Advanced Audio system with Harley’s new BOOM! (no kidding) speakers. Along with AM/FM, CB/intercom and XM Satellite capability, it’s also fully iPod compatible, and Harley even throws in a special 8GB iPod Nano with an etched Bar & Shield logo. The iPod docking station is located in the right saddlebag, but handlebar-mounted switches make it easy to select tunes while you’re on the road.

On the navigation front, the FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra features a Road Tech Zumo 660 GPS navigation system that interfaces with the stereo to provide voice-prompted driving directions. The Zumo system no longer requires CDs for downloading of new maps. Owners can now download current maps at the touch of a dash-mounted button. Delphi ABS (the brake hardware is still made by Brembo) and cruise control are standard equipment on the Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra, as is Harley’s proprietary Smart Security System with remote-control key fob that cuts the ignition and locks down the Tour-Pak and saddlebags when the rider is more than 6' away from the vehicle.

Harley-Davidson engineers have also attempted to further improve ergonomics by fitting the FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra with a new, heated seat with separate controls for the rider and passenger and a redesigned seat pan that is narrower in the thigh area, making it easier for inseam-challenged riders to reach the ground. Extra passenger comfort was also a priority, so Harley engineers added two “springboard-style” support rails that run lengthwise down the chassis under the passenger seat to better isolate the passenger from the road. The passenger backrest now features adjustable lumbar support, too.

But paint, fit and finish are what really make the CVOs stand out at first glance, and the Road Glide Ultra comes with a full complement of shiny bits from Harley’s Rumble Collection line of aftermarket accessories, including rider and passenger footboard inserts, shifter pegs, brake pedal, highway pegs, saddlebag latch covers and heated hand grips. Diamond-cut trim inserts for the CB pod, Screamin’ Eagle 110 intake, and Tour-Pak lid further enhance the Road Glide Ultra’s custom look. The FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra is available in three custom color combos: Rio Red/Black Ember with Quartzite Graphics; Charcoal Slate/Black Twilight with Quartzite Graphics, and Frosted Ivory/Vintage Gold with Quartzite Graphics. All three schemes are offset by a Granite powdercoat powertrain.

2012 Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra Prices MSRP is a whopping $35,999, and production will be limited to approximately 3000 units

2012 Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide Limited Edition

2012 Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide Limited Edition Review

In its second year as a CVO,  2012 Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide returns with one major new trick up its sleeve, a 19.0", 7-spoke Agitator front wheel the largest hoop ever used on a Harley-Davidson bagger solely to enhance its hot rod custom looks. Wheel width remains the same at 3.50", and the Street Glide’s rear wheel is unchanged, measuring 5.00" x 18". Surprisingly enough, its tires remain bias-plies rather than radials a Dunlop D408F 130/60-B19 M/C 61H front and a Dunlop D407 180/55-B18 M/C 80H rear as Harley engineers avoided having to retune the suspension to compensate for the lower-profile front tire. Like the Road Glide Ultra and the Ultra Classic Electra Glide CVOs, the Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide floating 300mm Brembo brakes also come standard with a Delphi-designed ABS system.

2012 Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide Limited Edition
2012 Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide Limited Edition

The rest of the 2012 FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide updates are cosmetic. For instance, its 6.0 gal., side-fill fuel tank features a new flush-mount cap and a new low-profile console for a sleeker appearance. That theme carries over to its new low-profile “bucket” seat, which features snakeskin leather inserts. The fairing, however, receives a new 7" smoked windscreen that is taller than the unit on last year’s Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide. Four different color combinations are available in 2011: Black Diamond with Crimson Tag Graphics; Autumn Haze and Antique Gunstock; Black Diamond and Inferno Orange; and Kryptonite and Black Diamond.

Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide Limited Edition
Harley claims that the various paint schemes are complemented by a specific engine color and finish, wheel finish, tank console finish, muffler end-cap style and inner fairing color, but the Kryptonite and Black Diamond finish is arguably the most exclusive, featuring a wrinkle-black engine finish and gloss black outer primary cover, rocker box, rocker cover, air cleaner cover, cam cover, and transmission side and top covers. Of course, 2012 FLHXSE2 CVO Street Glide retains the extended saddlebags with stop-tail-turn LED lights that are “frenched in” a popular postwar-era custom hot rod car trick that makes for a cleaner look and lowered rear suspension with dial-adjust hydraulic preload.

2013 Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Softail Convertible

2013 Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Softail Convertible

Also in its second year as a Harley-Davidson CVO, the new 2013 Harley Davidson FLSTSE2 CVO Softail Convertible is designed to quickly morph from a custom cruiser to a touring machine in seconds, thanks to its detachable fairing, leather saddlebags, passenger pillion and backrest. For 2013, however, the Convertible offers even more touring amenities, including a new Delphi-manufactured ABS system, a cruise control that’s integrated with the Convertible’s Electronic Throttle Control fly-by-wire system and an iPod/MP3-compatible audio system.

2013 Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Softail Convertible

While the cruise control unit functions the same as on Harley’s FL models, the Convertible’s brand new Delphi manufactured ABS system is unique to the Softail family (Harley officials let it slip well in advance of the production model launch that ABS will be offered as an option on all Softails in 2012 as well). Unlike the single two-channel system modulator on FLs, the Harley-Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Softail Convertible system uses two single-channel modulators. The front modulator is hidden between the front and rear headlight covers, and the rear modulator is hidden between the transmission and the mudflap on the front of the rear fender.

2013 Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Softail Convertible

Housed in the fairing, which can be removed just as quickly as last year’s model, the audio unit features a 20W-per-channel amplifier that powers a pair of integrated two-way speakers. It has on/off and volume control, but it does not allow the rider to scroll through menus or playlists, nor can it charge the iPod or MP3 player on the fly like the FL CVOs can. The 2013 FLSTSE2 CVO Softail Convertible features a completely keyless ignition. Similar to the touring CVOs, the key fob arms the system when the rider is more than 6' from the motorcycle, but the Convertible’s steering head must still be manually locked via Harley’s ubiquitous barrel key.

Harley Davidson FLHXSE2 CVO Softail Convertible

Harley engineers also increased the capacity of the Convertible’s leather-covered saddlebags, which are also lockable, and the styling of the bags has been enhanced with the addition of alligator-style inserts that match those found on the seat and on the backrest. Other styling changes include a chromed, welded “mini-ape” handlebar that is internally wired for a sleeker appearance.

Three color combos are available: Scarlet Red Pearl/Dark Slate Pearl with Metal Grind Graphics; Midnight Sky/Candy Cobalt with Blue Ice Graphics; and Maple Metallic/Roman Gold with Burnished Copper Graphics. The frame, swingarm, oil tank and frame inserts are all color-matched.

Are you being true to your community true to your department true to yourself? When you’re riding in the saddle of a Genuine Harley-Davidson Police FLHTP Electra Glide motorcycle, the answer is always yes. For more than one hundred years, the Harley-Davidson Motor Company has been the standard by which all other police motorcycles are measured. Which is why every 2012 Harley-Davidson FLHTP Police motorcycle is engineered to deliver the high level of performance you demand, designed to give you the confidence to handle any situation, and defined by the excellence that has earned you the trust and respect of your department, your peers and the community you protect and serve.

As a motor officer, you have the safety of your community riding along with you each and every day. You pride yourself on being reliable, dependable, and ready to serve at a moment’s notice. It’s the goodwill you bring to the community that sets you apart. So whether it’s controlling traffic, escorting a motorcade, or handling a situation that requires rapid response and extreme tactical skill, you sum up on-duty success in a single word Performance.

Every Harley-Davidson FLHTP Electra Glide Police motorcycle is engineered to deliver the ultimate in performance. We combine innovation an technology to create a ride that delivers power, control, and tactical maneuverability on demand, right from the very first roar of the legendary Twin Cam 103 powertrain. The strong FL frame, re-designed motor mounts, and Engine Idle Temperature Management System, provide a greater level of comfort allowing you to stay at your best, even during the longest of shifts. Protect and Serve isn’t a 9-to-5 job, and a Harley-Davidson isn’t a 9-to-5 motorcycle. That’s why when it comes to performance, community presence and pride, nothing compares to a cop on a Harley.

When you’re in the saddle of a Harley-Davidson, your presence brings a sense of security and confidence to those you protect and serve. On patrol, things can change in an instant, so you don’t have time to think about what your motorcycle can and can’t do. Uncertainty can lead to serious consequences. Your citizens trust you to be there for them, and when called upon, to respond without hesitation. Confidence yields success on patrol, and no other motorcycle can instill a greater sense of confidence in a motor officer than a Harley-Davidson. The FL family’s stronger frame, retuned suspension and Isolated Drive system, provide a smooth ride and steady feeling of control at any speed. The tight turn radius and optional independent front and back anti-lock braking system gives you total command over the road.

There is no greater symbol of respect and leadership in a community than a cop on a Harley. You can see it in the way people are eager to approach you and are comfortable in your presence. So it’s not surprising more than 3,600 law enforcement departments across North American and agencies in over 45 countries trust us to provide the motorcycles they need to protect the communities they serve.

2013 Harley Davidson CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Harley Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Despite the clear intrusion on its turf by the Road Glide Ultra, the Harley Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide is still claimed by Harley Davidson to be the epitome of touring luxury and performance. Returning for its sixth year in the CVO line-up, the Ultra Classic features the same technological advancements as the Harley Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Road Glide, including the new audio and navigation systems (sans the CVO Road Glide Ultra’s BOOM! Speakers), spring board suspended heated seat, adjustable rider and passenger backrests and standard remote-control power locks for the Tour Pak, saddlebags and ignition.

The 2013 HD CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide FLHTCUSE6 new styling appointments include chrome billet muffler caps with black spears, new chrome mirrors, diamond-cut inserts for the CB pod, Tour-Pak lid and air cleaner. It rolls on 18" Agitator wheels featuring Harley-Davidson’s Contrast Chrome finish, and it is available in only one custom color scheme, Black Ember/Rio Red with Flame Graphic. It will also be the rarest of Harley’s 2012 CVO models, with just 1500 units slated for production, and its $36,499 MSRP makes it the most expensive factory Harley money can buy.

Harley Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Harley-Davidson’s 2012 FLHTCUSE6 CVO press launch took place in the scenic Sierra Nevada mountains surrounding Lake Tahoe on the Northern Cal/Nevada border. With miles of twisty roads enveloped by breathtaking forest scenery, the area seemed the ideal place in which to shake down Harley’s A-list machines. Unfortunately, there was a fair amount of road construction taking place along our 160-mile route, and the lengthy delays this imposed exposed two serious shortcomings on the FL-based tourers: vibration and heat.

Harley-Davidson’s Screamin’ Eagle 110-cid (1803cc) V-twin presents an incredibly muscular persona. Its undersquare 101.6mm bore and 111.3mm stroke create sufficient torque to cleanly accelerate the 933-lb. Harley-Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide or the even heavier 943-lb. CVO Road Glide Ultra. Its fuel injection is precise, its throttle response is excellent, its clutch and shifting action are smooth, and its signature rumble is sure to be music to any Harley fan’s ears, especially when the motor is turning over smoothly at 2400 rpm at indicated 65 mph in sixth gear.

2013 Harley Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide

However, in traffic is where the fun stops and the discomfort starts. The Screamin’ Eagle 110’s increased stroke shakes hard enough to seriously challenge the latest FL chassis’ rubber-mount vibration damping system. While idling, we noticed a considerable amount of unwelcome shake in the handlebars and fairings on the FL CVO models, which actually reminded us more of the old, solid-mounted, Evolution-powered Softails than touring bikes. It only reinforced our belief that the 110’s minor increase in torque and horsepower over the previous Screamin’ Eagle 103-cid engine isn’t a good tradeoff for the 103’s smoother engine character.

2013 Harley Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO

Worse yet, all three CVO FL’s can become uncomfortably hot in traffic, and the heat is especially noticeable on the underside of the rider’s right thigh. Harley-Davidson engineers have attempted to address the heat issue by developing a system that cuts fuel and spark from the rear cylinder when the engine is at idle for a specified length of time, effectively turning it into an air pump which is supposed to lower engine temperatures. Even so, our experience with all three CVO FLs was that the rear exhaust pipe got so hot that it burned holes in the textile riding pants we were wearing when they came into slight contact with the pipe’s heat shield. We can’t imagine that this would be a desirable quality for someone ponying up over $30,000 for a motorcycle, limitededition or not.

Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide Vs 2012 Suzuki Boulevard M109R

Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide

This winter I had the opportunity to make two trips south of the 49th parallel once by air to Texas, and once on a road trip with my motorhome, trailer and Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide to Daytona. The flight to Texas was to participate in the launch of Suzuki’s new power cruiser, the 2012 Suzuki Boulevard M109R, while Daytona was all about the 65th running of Bike Week in Florida. Since 9/11, travel has never been the same as most of us know and I don’t think it ever will be. The United States has now become a victim of its own making as “homeland security” is always on the alert for the next shoelace attack. Don’t get me wrong; there is a need to protect one’s homeland,or even a personal household, from harm. But, on a personal note, I feel victimized whenever I travel south.

At airports I usually arrive with time to spare for the long lineups and the security checks where your baggage is inspected, your electronic equipment scanned and even your shoes must be kicked off, even if they don’t have laces. At some airports, you’re asked to undo your belt. If a bell goes off, your hands and arms must go straight out, while you hope your pants don’t drop to the floor as you collect your belongings. By now, you have already shown your photo ID twice, but get ready to do it again because you still have to get on the plane and you may be asked to present your identification by someone who checked you in an hour ago.

Harley Davidson Ultra Classic Electra Glide

From my home in Victoria it’s a short flight to Seattle, where you connect to your other major American destinations. But first, there’s another full check by Immigration and Homeland security: passports, photo check, recheck bags and check your shoes once again. And you’d be well advised to stay within the connecting flight area or you’ll be doing it all over again.

Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide

Hey, wait a minute, I still have my bags (I think they should have been checked through). But now I’m inside a secure area, where I know my luggage should not be. There is a nail clipper in my personal care bag, oh and what about the four-inch scissors and my riding gear? Man, that’s some dangerous stuff there! Even as I board the aircraft I know I have too many bags, but they let me take them as long as I can produce ID. So, how safe do I feel? Well, if I can do it without even trying, just think what the bad guys could do!

If you drive across the border, the lineup is usually an hour long just to get to the first checkpoint. Again you’re presenting your passport and answering questions: Where do you live? Why do you want to travel south? And so on and so forth … Then, the border guard’s eyes pop wide open wide as he spots my Harley-Davidson ring. (“Oh and your motorcycle is in the trailer?” He exclaims. “Well, pull over!”) So, you step out of your vehicle and into the customs agent’s office where more of your papers, photos and personal belongings are inspected.

2012 Suzuki Boulevard M109R

More questions: How much cash do you have? Where are you going? Why are you going there? “We’ll have to check the vehicle sir.” Meanwhile you have to sit there till you’re told to “Go ahead, have a good visit.” You watch others coming and going, and some people even had to leave their eggs behind. (“There goes breakfast honey.”) Now you’re in the “home of the free and the land of the brave.” Well I’m not so sure. Freedom, it seems, does come at a cost. And as you travel about, some neighbourhoods look pretty rough. At gas stations, it’s pay before you pump, gated residents are everywhere, and homes have bars on the windows. It’s quite an adjustment for a Victoria boy.
