NOW IN ITS 13th year, Harley-Davidson’s Custom Vehicle Operations
division continues to build exclusive motorcycles to target customers
willing to pay steep prices for the privilege of owning a Harley that is
a cut above a standard production machine. How steep? Consider that the
<b>2013 CVO Softail Convertible’s Prices MSRP of $29,599</b> is nearly $5000 more than what Harley’s regular-production touring flagship, the <b>Electra Glide Ultra Limited</b>, cost in 2010!<br /><br />What
Harley-Davidson offers this so-called “Alpha” customer in return for
his or her considerable investment, however, are limited-edition,
high-end custom motorcycles that bristle with stunning paint,
eye-catching polished surfaces and feature the cutting edge in
Harley-Davidson’s technology, some of which eventually finds its way
onto H-D’s production models. Like last year, all CVOs are powered by
Harley-Davidson’s sequential port fuel-injected Screamin’ Eagle 110 cid

gives customers the option of a full-dresser CVO with Harley’s
distinctive “shark nose” frame-mounted fairing, which reappears with the
addition of a 16" tall windscreen. First introduced on the Tour Glide
in 1980, the frame-mounted fairing has long been renowned for making the
FL chassis’ steering feel lighter when compared to the Dean and Stan
Wixom-designed, fork-mounted “Batwing” fairing found on Electra Glide
models. On the flip side, Harley customers have complained that the
frame-mounted fairing allows too much air to flow upward through the
opening around the triple clamps, compromising wind protection. <br /><br />Harley has finally addressed the situation on the <b style="color: #9900ff;">2012 FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra</b>,
which uses wind-tunnel-tested wind deflectors to reduce turbulence in
the cockpit. For maximum touring capability, the rear of the CVO Road

Of course, what would a full-dress Harley be without a monster stereo system? The <b>Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra </b>delivers
in the form of a 40W-perchannel Harman/Kardon Advanced Audio system
with Harley’s new BOOM! (no kidding) speakers. Along with AM/FM,
CB/intercom and XM Satellite capability, it’s also fully iPod
compatible, and Harley even throws in a special 8GB iPod Nano with an
etched Bar & Shield logo. The iPod docking station is located in the
right saddlebag, but handlebar-mounted switches make it easy to select
tunes while you’re on the road.<br /><br />On the navigation front, the <b>FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra</b>
features a Road Tech Zumo 660 GPS navigation system that interfaces
with the stereo to provide voice-prompted driving directions. The Zumo
system no longer requires CDs for downloading of new maps. Owners can
now download current maps at the touch of a dash-mounted button. Delphi
ABS (the brake hardware is still made by Brembo) and cruise control are
standard equipment on the <b>Harley-Davidson FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra</b>,
as is Harley’s proprietary Smart Security System with remote-control
key fob that cuts the ignition and locks down the Tour-Pak and
saddlebags when the rider is more than 6' away from the vehicle.<br /><br /><br />Harley-Davidson engineers have also attempted to further improve ergonomics by fitting the <b>FLTRUSE CVO Road Glide Ultra </b>with
a new, heated seat with separate controls for the rider and passenger
and a redesigned seat pan that is narrower in the thigh area, making it
easier for inseam-challenged riders to reach the ground. Extra passenger
comfort was also a priority, so Harley engineers added two
“springboard-style” support rails that run lengthwise down the chassis
under the passenger seat to better isolate the passenger from the road.
The passenger backrest now features adjustable lumbar support, too.<br /><br />But
paint, fit and finish are what really make the CVOs stand out at first
glance, and the Road Glide Ultra comes with a full complement of shiny
bits from Harley’s Rumble Collection line of aftermarket accessories,
including rider and passenger footboard inserts, shifter pegs, brake

Housed in the fairing, which can be removed just as quickly as last
year’s model, the audio unit features a 20W-per-channel amplifier that
powers a pair of integrated two-way speakers. It has on/off and volume
control, but it does not allow the rider to scroll through menus or
playlists, nor can it charge the iPod or MP3 player on the fly like the FL CVOs can. The <b>2013 </b><b>FLSTSE2 </b><b>CVO Softail Convertible</b>
features a completely keyless ignition. Similar to the touring CVOs,

group designed for low maintenance; black powder coat finish on engine;

transmission covers. <b>Compression ratio:</b> 9:6:1. Electronic
Sequential Port Fuel Injection System (ESPFI). Chain Drive Twin Cams.
Hydraulic Lifters requiring no maintenance service adjustments.<br />

Clutch
shall be of the latest multiple nine plate design, wet. Transmission to
be of latest design, manual type, with not less than six forward
speeds. Clutch disengage for starter motor operation. Primary Drive,
double-row chain, 34/46 ratio. Greaseless shifter shaft with
“anti-vibration” rubber spacers. Gear Ratios.<br />
<br />
<b style="color: #9900ff;">Brakes</b><br />
Hydraulic
Disc brakes for both front and rear wheels. Front brake having dual
11.81-inch diameter discs; rear brake shall be single disc. Brakes shall
be relatively free of heat fade, with four piston calipers and uniform
expanding rotors. Optional Anti-Lock Braking System available
(Independent Anti-Lock System).<br />
<br />
<b style="color: #9900ff;">Suspension</b><br />
Motorcycles
shall be provided with a suspension system to permit optimum handling
conditions as required in law enforcement. 41.3 mm telescopic front
forks. Rear air-adjustable shocks. Rear suspension swing arm bearings
shall require no lubrication for life of the motorcycle.<br />

Black
Slotted Disc Cast Aluminum wheels, rim material to be impermeable to
compressed air. Tubeless type tires to have non-skid tread, designed to
operate on paved highways and shall have a full, four-ply fabric
reinforcement. Bead-retention tires designed to remain on wheel during
sudden loss of pressure. Sealed automotive style wheel bearings
requiring no endplay adjustment and service interval of 100,000 miles
(160,000 km).<br />

Fuel
tank to have a capacity of six (6) U.S. gallons (or 22.71 liters). Must
provide a minimum of 1 gal (3.8 L) reserve fuel capacity when main

Harley-Davidson’s<b style="color: #9900ff;"> 2012 FLHTCUSE6 CVO</b>
press launch took place in the scenic Sierra Nevada mountains
surrounding Lake Tahoe on the Northern Cal/Nevada border. With miles of
twisty roads enveloped by breathtaking forest scenery, the area seemed
the ideal place in which to shake down Harley’s A-list machines.
Unfortunately, there was a fair amount of road construction taking place
along our 160-mile route, and the lengthy delays this imposed exposed
two serious shortcomings on the FL-based tourers: vibration and heat.<br />
<br />
Harley-Davidson’s Screamin’ Eagle 110-cid (1803cc) V-twin presents an
incredibly muscular persona. Its undersquare 101.6mm bore and 111.3mm
stroke create sufficient torque to cleanly accelerate the 933-lb. <b>Harley-Davidson FLHTCUSE6 CVO Ultra Classic Electra Glide</b>
or the even heavier 943-lb. CVO Road Glide Ultra. Its fuel injection is
precise, its throttle response is excellent, its clutch and shifting
action are smooth, and its signature rumble is sure to be music to any
Harley fan’s ears, especially when the motor is turning over smoothly at
2400 rpm at indicated 65 mph in sixth gear.<br />

Worse yet, all three CVO FL’s can become uncomfortably
hot in traffic, and the heat is especially noticeable on the underside
of the rider’s right thigh. Harley-Davidson engineers have attempted to
address the heat issue by developing a system that cuts fuel and spark
from the rear cylinder when the engine is at idle for a specified length
of time, effectively turning it into an air pump which is supposed to
lower engine temperatures. Even so, our experience with all three CVO
FLs was that the rear exhaust pipe got so hot that it burned holes in
the textile riding pants we were wearing when they came into slight
contact with the pipe’s heat shield. We can’t imagine that this would be
a desirable quality for someone ponying up over $30,000 for a
motorcycle, limitededition or not. This winter I had the opportunity to make two trips south of the 49th
parallel once by air to Texas, and once on a road trip with my
motorhome, trailer and <b>Harley Davidson FLHTCUI Ultra Classic Electra Glide</b> to Daytona. The flight to Texas was to participate in the launch of Suzuki’s new power cruiser, the 2<b>012 Suzuki Boulevard M109R</b>,
while Daytona was all about the 65th running of Bike Week in Florida.
Since 9/11, travel has never been the same as most of us know and I
don’t think it ever will be. The United States has now become a victim
of its own making as “homeland security” is always on the alert for the
next shoelace attack. Don’t get me wrong; there is a need to protect
one’s homeland,or even a personal household, from harm. But, on a
personal note, I feel victimized whenever I travel south.<br /><br />At
airports I usually arrive with time to spare for the long lineups and
the security checks where your baggage is inspected, your electronic
equipment scanned and even your shoes must be kicked off, even if they
don’t have laces. At some airports, you’re asked to undo your belt. If a
bell goes off, your hands and arms must go straight out, while you hope
your pants don’t drop to the floor as you collect your belongings. By
now, you have already shown your photo ID twice, but get ready to do it
again because you still have to get on the plane and you may be asked to
present your identification by someone who checked you in an hour ago.<br />

Hey, wait a minute, I still have my bags
(I think they should have been checked through). But now I’m inside a
secure area, where I know my luggage should not be. There is a nail
clipper in my personal care bag, oh and what about the four-inch
scissors and my riding gear? Man, that’s some dangerous stuff there!
Even as I board the aircraft I know I have too many bags, but they let
me take them as long as I can produce ID. So, how safe do I feel? Well,
if I can do it without even trying, just think what the bad guys could
do!<br />

If you drive across the border, the lineup is usually an hour long just
to get to the first checkpoint. Again you’re presenting your passport
and answering questions: Where do you live? Why do you want to travel
south? And so on and so forth … Then, the border guard’s eyes pop wide
open wide as he spots my Harley-Davidson ring. (“Oh and your motorcycle
is in the trailer?” He exclaims. “Well, pull over!”) So, you step out of
your vehicle and into the customs agent’s office where more of your
papers, photos and personal belongings are inspected.<br />

next year in 2007, Walden Bass was the first person to make a donation
to the Red Cross and get entered into the 2007 drawing. He was present
for the event and drove his winnings - a 2006 Harley Davidson Road King -
over to show everyone. Another lucky winner drove away on a brand new
Harley Davidson Road King FLHR that day, but it wasn't Bass. Kathryn
Guthrie of Opelika could not believe her ears when her number, 107, was
the last one called, making her the winner of the grand prize. Walden
Bass stayed to the end and congratulated Kathryn on her big win. The two
then posed for photos together.<br />

For
the 2012 drawing, Walden Bass was also present and his ticket remained
in the final five of the drawing. The last ticket drawn was # 295 which
belonged to Kohler Collier of Auburn. Collier was not present at the
auction but was called and notified minutes after his ticket was drawn.
He arranged to be at Big Swamp Harley Davidson the next day when the
doors opened to claim his prize.<br />
